Discussion Questions and Activities - Chapters Fifteen & Sixteen
Chapter 15
My Own Place
Playing my own music was part of my newfound freedom. I had a bicycle and could go places.
Pre-Chapter Discussion Questions
1. Do you enjoy the same kinds of music that your parents like? Siblings?
2. Which likes and dislikes make you unique from those in your family?
3. Do you have a special place you like to go to be alone? Describe that place.
Follow-Up Activity
Teach the students how to sit quietly in a meditation posture, with eyes closed. Play some relaxing, classical music. Afterward, explain that they can be responsible for their own relaxation. Discuss quiet, secret places of retreat. Next have each student illustrate or photograph a secret place where he/she likes to go to be alone. For those who do not have a secret place, encourage them to choose one. Share the pictures and/or photographs.
Chapter 16
Working for Mr. Ching
When I was a little boy and wished upon the Orphan Star, my fate appeared
as fixed as that one light hanging on the horizon. But tonight, my fortune is improving
as rapidly as the shooting stars are streaking across the sky.

2. What is it that gives you courage when you feel helpless?
3. How did Chi Fa deal with unfortunate circumstances? Despair?
4. What kinds of things did the hero use to comfort himself?
