Discussion Questions and Activities - Chapters Seven & Eight

Chapter 7

The Stranger's House: "We were alike--both orphans. Without words, he had taught me many things."

Pre-Chapter Discussion Questions

1. When you see a handicapped stranger, how does it make you feel?
2. What do you think handicapped people expect from strangers? Friends? Family?
3. Do you have a handicapped friend? What makes that person special to you?

Follow-Up Activity -- Do a Good Deed

As a class, discuss good deeds, charitable acts, and public services that they might perform. List the possibilities on the chalkboard. With eyes closed, vote to see which charity effort the students feel is the most worthwhile. Meet in small groups to brainstorm ideas for performing the good deed. Then in a large group setting, have each group share its ideas, and then formulate a plan for executing the good deed.

Chapter 8

On the Barge: "They only wanted someone to point a finger at and tease."

Pre-Chapter Discussion Questions

1. Do you know anyone who is a bully?
2. Have you ever been teased by other students? What did they say to you?
3. Why do you think bullies make fun of others?

Follow-Up Activity -- The Class Bully

Ask your tallest student or an older student to lie on a sheet of butcher paper. Have him/her extend arms and slightly spread feet apart. With a wide-tipped black marker, outline the student's body. Cut out the figure and hang it on the classroom wall. As a class, brainstorm things that might cause a person to become defensive. Examples: He has an older brother who tortures him. He is afraid of the dark, so likes to make others feel afraid. Use colorful, wide-tipped markers to list on the paper figure the causes of becoming a bully.
