Teacher's Guide for Double Luck
by Becky White

Discussion Questions and Activities, Chapters Three and Four

Chapter 3

On the Canal
Communist Father told me to build a bamboo roof so that there would be shade on the boat.

Pre-Chapter Discussion Questions

1. Have you ever been really hungry? What is the hungriest you have ever been?
2. Have you ever been criticized unjustly? How did it make you feel?
3. There is an old adage: “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Do you believe that is true? Can words hurt you?
4. Why do you think it is important that adults be respectful and loving toward children?

Follow-Up Activity--Build Cardboard or Bamboo Boats

Use recycled pint-sized milk cartons (wash in soapy water and rinse in lemon water), craft sticks, plastic cartons, etc., to design little boats. Working on individual projects, encourage students to use their imaginations in selecting materials and designing the crafts. If time allows, race the boats in a child-sized swimming pool.

Chapter 4

Favorite Uncle's House
I had enough rice to feed a boy for two years.

Pre-Chapter Discussion Questions

1. Do you have a favorite aunt or uncle?
2. Are you afraid of a particular person in your family? What makes that person scary to you?
3. Have you ever gone to someone's house and felt unwelcomed? Share that experience.
4. Have you ever know an adult who favored one child over another? Tell about that.

Follow-Up Activity--Two Bags of Rice and Pig's Food

Chi Fa had two large bags of rice--approximately 200 pounds. For this activity you will need a large slow cooker, a bag of rice, and sweet potatoes. In a slow cooker, place twice as much water as rice. Cook on high until the rice has absorbed all of the water. While rice is cooking, wash and cut up the uncooked sweet potatoes including the roots. Give everyone a bite-sized piece to sample. When the rice is done, give each student a small paper cup of unseasoned rice. After everyone has washed his/her hands, let them eat the rice with their fingers. Discuss what it would be like to have only a small portion of rice to eat each day, and what it would be like to eat raw sweet potato roots.
